Hey everyone!

In case anyone missed my introduction, Iím the Ford Service rep for the boards now. In some cases, itís possible the dealer didnít reset it for the last oil change. Also, changing the oil too soon doesnít hurt anything. I see a lot of great suggestions (thanks, guys), so Iíll add what it states on page 382 of the 2012MY Focus Owner Guide 5th Printing:

ďYour vehicle is equipped with the Intelligent Oil Life Monitorô (IOLM) system which displays a message in the message center at the proper oil change service interval; this interval may be up to one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km). When ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED appears in the message center display, itís time for an oil change; the oil change must be done within two weeks or 500 miles (800 km) of the ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message appearing. The Intelligent Oil Life Monitorô must be reset after each oil change; refer to the Instrument Cluster chapter.

If your message center is prematurely reset or becomes inoperative, you should perform the oil change interval at six months or 5,000 miles (8,000 km) from your last oil change.

Your vehicle is very sophisticated and built with multiple complex performance systems. Every manufacturer develops these systems using different specifications and performance features. Thatís why itís important to rely upon your dealership to properly diagnose and repair your vehicle.

Ford Motor Company has recommended maintenance intervals for various parts and component systems based upon engineering testing. Ford Motor Company relies upon this testing to determine the most appropriate mileage for replacement of oils and fluids to protect your vehicle at the lowest overall cost to you and recommends against maintenance schedules that deviate from the scheduled maintenance information.Ē

Cory, this has been said many times, but if Ford really wants owners to use the iolm, allowing the car to disclose the % oil life remaining would be incredibly helpful. Why should this be such a secret?

It would demonstrate the thing is working, allow owners to plan oil changes (e.g. Trips), and allow ownrs who are naturally cautious to change at a life that makes them comfortable (e.g. 25%).Without this, I suspect most owners will just ignore it and go with 3 months/3,000 miles or some other wasteful schedule. Encourage your engineers to catch-up with GM!

You'd think this would be at the top of there list. When the companies do side by side comparisons, they most generally list features which their car has, and the competition doesn't. Considering they put all the crap in the car to do this, I think the software to display would be the cheapest thing.

In regards to the IOLM system displaying when the oil has to be changed. Could it also be that this feature is broken on most cars like the low winshield washer fluid alert. I know I had to have the dealer fix something in the computer to tell me that it was low.

Cory, your recommendation to change oil at six months or 5K miles IS a deviation from the Owner's Guide 5th Printing which shows the recommended engine oil change interval to be between 7.5k to 10k in normal driving conditions. Is there some other official Ford publication on this subject?

Same here, message popped up while driving @ 10,250 miles. I cheated the computer by changing the oil at 1k and again at 4k. Oil changes and iOLM resets couldn't be easier.

Since car was built 06DEC11, the iOLM doen't appear to go by date.

Just waiting for the washer fluid to run out and see if a message appears. If not, TSB 12-4-13 will fix it.

So is it safe to say that if the monitor is working then it should active every 10,250 miles? I have not had the monitor activate, however I have changed the oil every 5k miles. I reset the monitor each time, except this last time. Since I last reset it at 10k it should activate just after 20k miles then?

Not sure if I need the TSB applied to my car. I know I need the washer fluid one done. Would be good to get both done at the same time.

Since my original post, the car has turned 16000 miles. Oil Life Monitor was not reset when the oil was changed at 10K.
It still has not come on.

There is a TSB (12-5-5) for this, but it requires reprogramming the PCM. I'm pretty sure the 12B37 update should have fixed it as well then, right?

Beating a dead horse here, but if Ford would allow the car to display a remaining oil life % (the car does know this), owners just might learn to trust the iolm. As it is, many will assume it's not working and default to 3 months/3,000 miles or some other arbitrary and short interval.

The IOLM should really just be treated as a courtesy alert in case you're driving more severely than you realize. Otherwise just ignore it and change your oil every 7,500 (the lower end of the recommended normal range) or at every tire rotation if that suits you better.

There are stories on BITOG of Honda V6s sludging up even though the owner followed the onboard oil change alerts.
