Rear Main Seal replacement and maybe clutch
I'm going to be replacing the rear main seal over the Christmas break.
I'm just wondering if there are any tips and techniques that anyone would care to share to make the bear of a job a bit easier. I don't have a lift or trans jack. Just a jack, jack stands and a plethora of air tools. Also, My car has 76K on it and I'm pretty the throwout bearing is making some noise when it sits at idle. I'm debating on if I want to replace just the slave/throw out bearing or go ahead and replace the clutch as well. It appears that most clutch kits come with the slave/throwout asy. |

Every svt I've been in makes clutch noise at idle. At 76k your prob fine. I'm at 100k and only hear the noise here and there.
Why are you replacing the rear main. Its not common for that to go out. |

THere's oil all over the underside but it is most prominent between the engine and trans.
It leaked 2 quarts in 2 months. |

You've checked the VC gasket? Could be leaking down the back of motor
I believe my windage tray gasket is leaking, but not my rear mine I don't lose much, but I can smell it on exhaust when I idle for a bit. |

VC Gasket is dry.
Could be the windage tray I suppose. But it is saturated between the engine and trans. There is no oil around the rest of the windage tray that I can see. I get the oil on exhaust smell as well. |

If you need clutch help let me know. I did mine with a driveway, cinder blocks, air tools and an engine hoist I borrowed (you can rent them). It's tedious as hell but it'll save you the $1000+ they're gonna quote you on like they did me.

Hi all. First post as I just joined. I have an oil leak between the engine and the transmission and was guessing it was the rear main seal. It might be a few weeks before I can get to it ... If I keep it full of oil how risky is it to drive on a trip?v
