I don't have a fuelly started up for this car just yet, I'll get around to it. Lol
Here's a pic from my ride home today, scangauge ii shows 42 mpg. And yes it's calibrated. I got big into "hypermiling" over the summer, used to get 43 mpg avg in my old kia that was rated 30 hwy :what: can't wait to see what I can do in the focus when it warms up!!!

I was wondering if you could do us all a favor and describe what you do to achieve that awesome number. Hopefully we can all learn something from what you do on a daily basis.

So was I...

I'm doing well for still driving in the 70-75mph range. Luckily I'm mostly highway, but if I could keep to 55mph, I'd probably average near 43 mpg or so.

My hypermiling consists of LRR 15" winter tires, aero caps, and not driving like an ass. I should stop by the ethanol-free gas station, it's been a while...

There is so so much that goes into it, and it all takes a lot of practice, but here are some of the more important things...

SLOW DOWN! I rarely rise above 55/60, pretty much only when it isn't safe to travel at 55 due to highway traffic.

Anticipate and learn to read traffic lights. I'm not looking at just the first light closest to me, I'm looking way down the road and looking at every light I can see in my path, if I can coast to it, I darn well will lol. Basically the point here is use your brakes as little as possible, every time you touch the brakes you're turning fuel energy into brake dust. If its safe to do so, go ahead and coast up to the light, it makes a huge difference.

In my kia my LOD readout on my scangauge II was accurate, so I used that a LOT (for some reason it reads super high on the focus) I've had to substitute it out for the TPS as you can see, it doesnt help at all with guessing engine load, but it'll sure help keep your throttle steady lol Basically you want to be at about 70% load while accelerating, then while cruising you want to hold the lowest possible load while maintaining speed.

When it comes to hills, forget your cruise control, it actually does the opposite of what we want on the hills. You want to actually lose speed uphill, using the least amount of power and throttle to get up the hill as possible (SAFELY). Gain speed on the downhills. Think of it as if you were riding a bike. Isn't it easier and more energy efficient to speed up downhill so when you hit the uphill you've got momentum to help? And is it very energy efficient to try to haul ass up the hill as warp speed on your bike or to just pedal hard enough to get to the top?

And the last thing... COAST. Our cars are equipped with ADFCO for a reason, when you are facing a long downhill with some decent slope, just coast it and use the ADFCO to your advantage. All the distance travelled while under ADFCO is basically free travel, you're not using any gas.

As I said these are really just the basics, there are many great videos on youtube about the subject and there is a site called ecomodder that has TONNSSSS of this information, not to plug another site or anything, haha
