Two parking positions on the front wipers?

Hello!

I have a MK1 2001 focus wagon 1.6 petrol and i am from Norway with the steering wheel on the left side. Two weeks ago my front wiper motor shorted. I could see the lights inside the car dimmed when wipers stopped a couple of times on a full cycle. Later that day they started to go all the time on intermittent and when i pressed the flushing button. I then tried to change the combined relay for the two new itermittent relays. It still went all the time on these two modes. So i returned the two relays. Then i bought a new wiper motor and it worked again.

When changing the wiper motor i wanted to mark the position for the motor arm. But when i took the motor/arms assembly out it would not stop on the parking position. So i lost my standard parking position reference. I tried a position on the new motor and put it together and my wipers stops too high.

My other problem is that with the one swipe (push down) and the 2 and 3 stalk position has a lower parking position than the intermittent and flush parking position. The difference is 1-2 inches. I went and bought the two relays again but it made no change. I have read that some cars has two parking positions P1 and P2. The reason for this is that in the winter its a good idea to get the wipers stop a little higer to avoid snow and ice buildup and get more heat from the frontshield heater on to the wipers.

So my questions are.

1. What position should the wiper motor arm be in parking position. Anybody got pictures?

2. Could somebody test this for me? Check if the itermittent parking position is higher than the one swipe parking position.

Answers would really help my out before i take the assembly out again for adjusting. If the focus has two parking positions i wonder which of these i should use for adjustment of the motor arm. I would guess the lowest one swipe parking position.

Maybe my post was too long since i got no answers. Or aint nobody driving this old focus anymore?

Anyway my most important question is this.

2. Could somebody test this for me? Check if the itermittent parking position is higher than the one swipe parking position.

As far as I know there are NOT 2 parking positions. But then again our US spec focus might be different in that aspect.

gondorian!

Thank you so much for all the work you put into this!

I now think that us models may be different than eu models. Because yesterday i opened my burned wiper motor. And found out that it is constructed to stop higher on intermittent. Look at the picture and there are 3 circles with different contact intervals.

1. Inner circle is the parking for normal wiping 2, 3 and one swipe.
2. Mid circle is for giving message back to relay for both inner and outer circle.
3. Outer circle is for intermittent 1 and wipe flush parking. When it gets contact the relay turns off.

So if you compare inner and outer circle you can actually see that the outer circle will stop a little later than inner circle. Inner circle stops when it loses contact and the outer stops when it gets contact.

Did you try the intermittent one click up on stalk? Because thats the one that stops higher on my model. Normal wiping and one swipe stops all at the lowest on mine to.

Pictures have to be stored online somewhere else like photobucket or flickr or something. I just upload them to my google plus account and copy the link.

Here are some pictures of after regular (two positions up wiping) and then intermittent (one position up). I stuck a leaf on the windshield so I could judge the distance better and it looks like the wipers stop at the same point.

Gondorian thank you again!

I have read a lot and found this that shows what happened when my motor burned and my wipers did not pause anymore on intermittent. Also found out that on focus there is one park position and one break position. The brake position is grounding the motor causing it to suddenly stop an makes it impossible to move the motor around. So if you are driving on the highway at fast speed the wipers would coast because of the wind but this motor brake will prevent that. If you look at the pictures you can see the inner park line and the outer brake line. And you can see the park line comes before the brake line on the circle. So i bet you have the same wiper motor as mine. Your wipers stops at the same place but that could be because of the position of the motor crank arm. It makes an illlusion to us that it parks at the same place. It could stop before the bottom at park and after bottom at break, and to us it looks like it stops at the same place LOL! This is my theory anyway. Because my motor crank arm stops with a difference of 1.5 cm / 0.59 inches between these two park/ brake positions on both my old wiper motor and the new one.

Here is a good link to understanding this.

So now i only have one problem left. I have to adjust the wipermotor crank arm to the original position. I have searched everywere after a picture of this. If anybody has a wiper assembly laying around or someone are changing wiper motor could you please take a picture of the position of the motor crank arm. And remember to use the one swipe one time before you are changing your motor so it is parked. If you do not do that you will end up with my problem!

Thanks
