Running on empty :)

I few weeks ago I drove on 0 for 6 or 7 miles! Fill up was 11.88 gallons. I was pretty nervous needless to say. Was driving to San Fran, passed a gas station and it said I had 60 miles to go in my car and the next city was 45 away. Figured I'd be ok. But for me, when I hit about 36 miles to go, it drops extremely quick till about 16 - I maybe can go 10 miles and it drops 20 off the gauge which is somewhat annoying.

Do you guys have a tendency to drive faster when you're really low on fuel and not sure where the next gas station is?

I've got about 6 miles after it read 0 miles. Lots of coasting and neutral is your friend. Car was sputtering though, when I pulled up to the pump.

As you drive the DTE will update based on your current mileage.

When you start up the car it will guesstimate based off an average and update accordingly.

I have found my DTE to be unreliable at best. There have been times when I was at 6 miles to empty but when I filled her up only 11 gallons went in the tank. Then one time I ran out and was stranded on the side of the highway with the DTE telling me I had 25 to empty! Worst part was I had just gone by a gas station but it was overpriced Chevron and I was going to Sam's Club a couple of miles up the road. Lesson learned, I try to fill at 1/4 now if I can help it.
