The great thing about aerodynamics is the air stream flows right at the surface of the car instead of being pushed up over it. So it is conceivable and probable that you will get more chips from stuff hitting the surface instead of being pushed up and around the car. It's not so much the paint as the air flow around the car.

Well, Paint technologies are improving...but it only helps the companies to reduce costs of production and pollution rates due to VOC's.
Nevertheless...the Paint is way more delicate...and this is because the 3 layers (Primer,Base and Clearcoat) are bonded in wet. If you scratch your car, you'll see a brown layer...thats the E-Coat. In the conventional process, Base is aplied after a cured primer.
An expert will say you are getting the same quality (resistance, paint thickness, appareance), and data can prove it ...but even so...paint comes out way to easy!

...good old paint U_U

I have had my Focus less than 6 months and I have started noticing more paint chips. In just the last two weeks alone at least half a dozen on the hood, front fenders and doors.

With my clear bra, my Focus has gained all of two rock chips in a year; one on the roof and one on the lip of the passenger quarter panel. The nose is still perfect.

How far up on the hood is your clear bra?

I had one installed but I still get the chips above it. Covering the entire hood would cost almost as much as repainting it :(

Paint chips are littering my car like crazy. I touched up 8 the other day just on painted surfaces. There is another 6 on the bumper. I've had it almost six months. At this rate when its 3 years old it will have 84 paint chips. I have started saving to have the whole front of the car repainted.

The only thing that helps with the crappy paint is to 3M the hood - but you'd have to 3M all of it and not just the edge of hood...pricey...I had the edge 3M'd, but that doesn't help higher up as paint is weak...

Ive had my focus for 7 months, and it has 18,000 miles on it. Using an analogy I saw earlier, the front valance looks as if it has been blasted with birdshot repeatedly. The hood also has multiple bad spots. Im pretty sure that it is 90% bugs eating up my paint which is crazy since I keep my car washed and always have a good coat of wax. At this rate, there will literally be no paint on my front valance after a year of owning the car. It has to be my biggest gripe so far, even bigger than the DCT with a mind of its own.
