In actuality, there's a few gallons extra below E to allow you time to get gas.

I discovered this from tracking my gas mileage at the pump. I'd be on empty and go for a fill up and the amount of gas that went in wasn't even close to the size of the gas tank.

I figured about 1/5 of the tank's capacity is below E. Oh, that wasn't on a Focus though, lol!
So you're basically telling us that the pumps at gas stations lie as to how much we're putting in our cars? Either that or you had one car with an inaccurate gauge that somehow led you to come up with a tale about how manufacturers purposely do this.

I've let it fall to no less than 40, my commute is 40 miles back and forth anyways, and I know that on our old Explorer we always let it fall into empty, and the fuel pump gave out in four years. Whether they were related, I don't know, but I don't wanna risk getting stranded, especially when it gets to the low teens around here lol.

It actually works well. It drops rapidly while driving because the gas is sloshing around in the tank.

The pump is in the tank for the gas to keep it cool. If you run it down to near E you run the risk of burning up your pump.

No no.

The gauge in your car lies.

E isn't really E. There's extra to get you to a gas station!

I got the low fuel light last night with DTE at 39 and it took only 10.5 USG.
I guess it just depends when yours was built and what lot number parts are in it.

It's set to warn you before it's too low at about 50 miles left afaik, but that range estimate is based on the current average mpg.

I keep my gas tank above a 1/4 tank...gas is what cools your fuel pump..and I really do not want to spend hundreds of dollars...short term...no harm...long term of running it close to E is too costly

last night I had zero miles on my gauge mainly becasue I didn't want to stop in the ghetto for gas. I put 2.4 gallons in once I did stop and the car jumped up to a quarter tank and 94 miles to go (at 28 mpg). There was plenty of gas to spare and presumably, no air was getting sucked into the fuel pump.

The other day I stretched it out a bit to get to my favorite gas station that sells non-ethanol gas. I was about a 1/4 mile away from the station and my display said 7 miles to empty. My pedal went dead and my car died. Very embarrassing. I won't be going that low ever again.

In short: don't trust the Distance To Empty gauge unless you like to walk.
