Shuts off when hitting bumps...
I have searched around only to find similar issues with missing symptoms. I have a 2000 ZX3 and last night while in transit I hit a bump causing the engine to shut off completely. The gauges also reset and instrument lights lit up. It did not reset the time and the radio stayed on. Coasted to a stop turned the key and she started right back up... Continued my commute only to hit another bump and again, shuts off immediately, no hesitation, surges or sputtering. I opened the hood and jiggled around battery wires and checked the grounds, all seem to be in good order. Started it up and she ran fine for a while. Turning into my neighborhood I hit one last bump and again she dies. All other similar issues seem to be upon breaking or decelerating, this happens to me regardless of accelerating or decelerating if I hit a bump. CEL is on with no codes detected. Any suggestions on where to start tomorrow?
Thanks in advance!! |

Sounds like a bad power wire. Also take off and clean your terminals you never know they may look good but not making good contact. The power wire comes off of the alternator, then goes to the starter and then to the battery. Mine never shut off when hitting a bump but the gauges resetting and a bump causing it makes think right away a power wire issue. My wire got so hot it melted the insulation, that could have happened to yours and now when you hit a bump it shorts out or that's what I'm thinking?

That kind of my guess well. I'm assuming your car to be a manual tranny which may explain why it wouldn't actually shut off. Thanks for the advice, that's where I will start. If anyone has something to add I would most appreciate it!
Thanks again sleepy! |

Check the pig tail that plugs into the alternator. Those wires are known to break or pull out. Perhaps when you hit a bump it jars it loose just enough but goes back to making a contact.

Here are my findings so far:
Wiring looks good at a glance (haven't dove that deep yet) Located inertia cutoff and inspected press button to be sure Went for a test drive troubleshooting most simple first Hit a bump, off she went, at this point it would not start immediately and the following occurred. Powertrain indicator lit up and lines on odometer I am now getting dtc D262 WTF? Haha. |

The culprit was a mere faulty relay, replaced almost all the relays not long ago, turns out one was a dud...
I guess I was just over thinking things. |
