I got to the pump once with 0 ToE. I can't remember how much went in the tank, but it was pretty well dry.

I ran my 05 Explorer 5 extra miles once it reached 0 miles to empty. It had a 22 gal tank and took 21.9 gallons... oops.

Just FYI, E doesn't really mean empty.
Manufacturers purposely do this so that drivers only think their cars are empty so they get gas immediately. In actuality, there's a few gallons extra below E to allow you time to get gas. I discovered this from tracking my gas mileage at the pump. I'd be on empty and go for a fill up and the amount of gas that went in wasn't even close to the size of the gas tank. I figured about 1/5 of the tank's capacity is below E. Oh, that wasn't on a Focus though, lol! |

The furthest I've stretched a tank was also the tank that I had gotten the highest mileage. I think the DTE was still above 10 miles but I'd gone 470.1 miles on 11.176 gallons of the 12.4 gallon capacity. That doesn't sound like the car was leaving a reserve cushion of 2-3 gallons based on the DTE calculations.

Drove my car to work the other day, when I pulled in to work DTE was 6 miles. When I left 8 hours later I started the car and it said DTE was 29 miles. Haha I don't trust it anymore.

Good to know the gas gauge goes below E. My last car, '98 VW Golf, would go empty above E, in "the red zone" (the last 1/8). I learned of this while running out of gas. In a tunnel. During rush hour.

I frequently run it down to around 20 to E, gas gauge just below the E line, and I usually end up putting around 11.2 to 11.4 gallons in it, so around 0.8 to 1 gallon remaining. Which is a little conservative given the estimated 20 miles to empty (and averaging around 33 mpg), but not much.
