Bought my Titanium in August 2011 and have absolutely loved every minute of my ownership. MFT is technology and as everyone with a computer can attest, there's always a glitch or two, but 98% of the time it's flawless. I've found of the 2% of the issues I have, if I just have a little patience, the system works itself out within 5 minutes or so. In talking to the Ford rep here, they indicate the issues with MFT stem from the interface with Sirius traffic/weather and since that has expired I've had zero issues.

As for the DCT, the 'shudder' issue (in my case) is avoidable. It only happens when the engine is cold, first thing in the morning and when I go up a hill. I downshift to a lower gear and it doesn't occur. After that one adjustment in the morning I don't give it a second thought the rest of the day.

I have an Android Charge and it works great for calls and listening to music via Bluetooth. It will fail to connect on occasion but that can be fixed in just a couple screens. Again, it's technology.

Bottom line, if technology is your enemy, stay away from MFT. If you can deal with it pretty easily, MFT is a dream.

I stayed away from the MFT but I have a DCT. I love it. I have had no issues what so ever with mine.

I park in a parking garage during the day, and on the way home I don't notice the jerky-ness.

Thanks for that feedback. Glad to know there's somebody else using the original Droid X still, besides myself. Now I don't feel so obsolete. I drove the car last evening and I was overall very impressed with the car. The only real gripe I have is the leg room in the back. By comparison the VW Jetta with TDI which is my other consideration has more leg room but also feels much larger. There's advantages and disadvantages to both. I must say, the Ford stands out a tech feature laden car when compared to the VW. Not to many bells and whistles on the VW. In fact, it's pretty stark when you compare the two. The VW is more basic with manual climate controls and no MFT, manual on/off headlights, etc. Also, the VW being a turbo diesel, there will be higher maintenance cost. One plus is that with VW they do offer free maintenance for 3yr/36k. If things go snap and a part is needed, the parts will also be more pricey. On the plus side of things, the VW can reach out to 50MPG (according to some owners I've spoken to) which is huge and the torque curve on the car is great! Lots of low end torque with that turbo diesel. Still, they're tradeoffs. No question in terms of bang for the buck, you can't beat the Ford. So I'm trying to weigh all of this out. I think I would be happy with either car and by the way, the VW has a few niggling issues with it also....like the Focus. I was hoping there would be a clear cut winner, but since both have issues it makes the decision much harder for me. We'll see what happens today after I talk to the VW guy about payment, etc.. By the way...I got a super low payment on the Focus $312 per mo. Gotta love 0% APR for 60 mos. So that's a big consideration also.

I was deciding between the golf tdi and the focus. 3 things pushed me away from the golf, despite the fact I loved how it drove.

1) very few options available as you describe. No leather, no auto climate control, minimal tech, etc.
2) my car lives outside and in the winter it gets snow and ice on it. The tdi will not warm up while at idle, so remote start is useless and clearing snow and ice seemed like it would be more difficult without defrost. With the focus I hit the remote start and come out to a warm car with clear windows.
3) there seem to be design issues with the hpfp in the tdi that have left some people unhappy with very high repair costs.

High repair costs is one thing that does frighten me. Every owner I've communicated with have stated that you really have to stay on top of the maintenance or the car puts you in the penalty box. I always do service my cars on schedule, but the point is the TDi seems to be very unforgiving. I must admit, at this point the Focus looks like the smart money.

One more question....while taking a test drive yesterday, I noticed a loud buzzing noise that came through the speakers. I couldn't hear the radio...only the constant "bzzzzzz...." then it went away. have you experienced that in your car?

Edit: with respect to maintenance on the vw, if there is a design flaw inside th hpfp as some suggest, maintenance wont matter. I was probably willing to roll the dice on that. I think the no warming up in the winter thing was the nail in the coffin for me. If I garaged my car it wouldnt have mattered.

May I ask one more question? What's the difference between Selectshift and Powershift? Which of the two would my Focus have? Titanium edition...fyi.

Selectshift is the S gate on the gear shift lever which also allows for manual shifting through the gears without the use of a clutch pedal with the click of the switch on the gear lever. If putting it into S without touching the switch the car remains in sport shift automatic mode which uses gears 1-5, and more aggressively downshifts on braking to bring the engine speed up to keep the car in the powerband.

Powershift is Ford's trademarked name for the dual clutch automated manual transmission (DCT).

The Titanium if it is an auto will have the PowerShift DPS6 with the Selectshift feature.

The base S/SE with the Powershift transmission only have a L range instead of a sport mode as well as a hill grade assist switch that locks the car out of 6th gear instead of the manual shift switch.
