Ford focus window help.

Hi people.

I have a ford focus and the drivers window is not working but the passenger side is. I'm going to hve a go of it myself. What's the first thing I do and check if I have power going to the button. How do I check the motor and regulator?

first off what year is it? take the door panel off and use a multimeter to test voltage at the motor harness to see if it's getting power when the switch is activated. if it's getting power then it the motor, if not then it's probably the switch itself. I had the switch go out on my 03 when I had it.

It's an 04. How would I know if the regulator had gone? What if I just put a test lead into the switch and active the button? Would that tell me I have power going to the switch? That would leave two possible answers either the motors packed up or the regulators not working?

Also.. If the regulator has gone that wouldn't stop the window from moving would it? It would just go down further than it should?

you can test at the switch as well to see if it has power coming in to it and out. you'll just need to know which wires to test to do that. easiest way to test electrical is usually start at the end (motor) and then work your way back to the source if needed. do you hear any sound from it when the switch is activated that would lead you to believe that the motor is jammed?

No noise. I have a feeling the motors not working. I doubt it's the fuse cause the passenger works and I think they run on the same fuse. How would I know if the regulator is jammed or not working? I have a test lead which lights up if their is power... If it don't light up then there's no power.

a multimeter would be safer than just a test light and will tell you more if you can use that instead. I believe the regulator and motor are in the same unit (i.e. a regulated motor). and yes they should be on the same fuse so that's prolly not it. you can always disconnect the motor/regulator from the rest of the system (unplug it) and hook a 12volt drill batter up to the motor and see if it spins. best bet is it's either the motor or the switch.

did that window just stop altogether (work one day then nothing the next) or did it start acting weird before it died. like it it went down, but didn't want to come back up or worked off and on with holding the switch?

first option is most likely motor, second is the switch.

So would you say that the motor and regulator will hve to be bought as one piece not seperate? If I have power coming from the switch the chances are that it's very unlikely for it to be the switch? Is there any way I can test the motor with two pieces or one piece of wire?

It just packed up one day I had no problems with it. Then went to put my window down and It wouldn't come down. What if unplugged the plug from the motor,
Plugged a multimeter in and then press the switch. ?
