Block heater leaking

I have a 2012 SEL HB. It came with a block heater. Went to dealer for an oil change and tire rotation. Tech told me NOT to use my block heater because it was leaking a small amount of red fluid. He had no idea what it was and told me that the transmission fluid level was ok. He recommended service but of course it was a Saturday.

Has anyone heard of this happening?

Isn't Ford's OEM factory coolant now orange in color? Why was the tech concerned about tranny fluid......the block heater is installed in the engine "block"? I'm guessing, but I'll bet what the tech saw may have been a factory lubricant that was used on the heater seal/"O"ring during installation. If it's actually leaking coolant the heater will have to be removed and reinstalled with a new seal/"O"ring.....it could have been damaged during the original installation.

Thanks for the reply Grumpy!

The guy told me specifically it was a red fluid.

And I don't know exactly where the block heater is installed. I always thought it was a heating element that attaches to the block and heats things via conduction.

Do some block heaters actually penetrate the block and have a heating element in the oil/fluid/whatever?

Will need to see what it is once I get it in for service.

Hi dnprall,

When you take your Focus back in for service, I'm sure your Service Manager or tech will be able to answer your questions about the fluid leaking from your block heater. If you'd like, I'm happy to get your case escalated; just send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll do the rest!

Have a great day,
Crystal
