body shop said the airbags should have whent of

'12 ti hatch. Mife wife hit a deer on the high way. The body shop will have the car done 2maro. Its been thr a few weeks. They called and said they are taken the car to the dealer tomarow cuz the airbag sencers went off and the replaced them. The system just needs flashed? They said there was some fault in deployment. They did replace airbag(s). What would have happened if this was a head on with another vehicle. Do i have an argument with ford ? Or is it a waste?

If the deceleration was not severe enough to trigger the air bag deployment they generally don't go off just for the hell of it. The sensor could be damaged but if the rate at which the car slows down is not severe enough the air bag should not deploy as it may cause more harm than good.

On what basis do they claim that the airbags should have deployed?

The sensors probably registered the crash that's why they need to reset the system. With new cars they have "smart" airbags won't deploy under certain circumstances.

I am just saying thats what the body shop said. The sub fram was pushd back enough to bend the a pillars. <<<<--- just saing decent hit. Other than there opinions i have no credible knowledge on the topic. Hence me posting here.

Hhmmm well we are even less qualified to answer the question if the bags were supposed to go off. Talk to your insurance agency and they will probably send someone to investigate if the wreak was that bad.

Considering how the car hit a smaller object the car likely did not decelerate as rapidly as the dead deer would. So even though there looked to be a lot of damage to the car the chances of it decelerating rapidly enough to require air bag deployment are not as great as if the car hit another car head on or even in a glancing blow.

I am a mechanical engineer, but I did not work on these air bags so I wouldn't be able to tell you about the specific deployment thresholds.

well guys its either that or something similar to the fiestas recall... though I believe those didn't deploy the side airbags if there was no one in the passenger seat.
