2012 Focus exploding sunroof on local news

My ol' lady was watching the news this evening when she saw a family friend being interviewed about her 2012 Focus sunroof exploding and that Ford won't pay for it. Interesting story with mixed opinions.

This girl got us a deal on our ordered 2012 of which I unfortunately wasn't able to follow through on the deal due a lot of life problems happening at once... And while I'm still rolling around in a battered GM POS.

Not trolling the boards in anyway. I just found it an interesting story and a small world.

Kind funny.
Don't know if it changes, but when I watched the video it was sandwiched between two Ford commercials.

Another reason why I special ordered my SEL without a sunroof. All of the high trim level Foci in the area all had sunroofs/rattle traps/potential water leaks, and now exploding roofs that the warranty won't cover. Since a lot of the problem seemed to be in the cold climate areas, I would offer up temperature differential as a cause. If it is really warm on one side of the glass and sub zero on the other, I could see some shattering. I bet the sunroof is not made to the same specs as the windshield, if it was it probably wouldn't be shattering.

THe sunroof is tempered glass. That makes it deliberately stressed internally.
Some sunroof glass may be TOO stressed.
Google brings up tons of Hyundai roofs breaking. Not too many others.
Then the fact more sunroofs aare replaced in xxx canada, than anywhere else. (and the blame is placed on the type of gravel they use there in roadwork.)
So I do not read ANYWHERE that Ford sunroofs are some giant danger.
I personally never heard or saw a sunroof break.
My rear hatch on a 1989 Tracer self destructed but it was a junkyard replacement for accident damage to hatch, which broke after using the rear defrost.
The insurance Co forced the dealer to replace it again no cost to me.

Then a back, side window on a Buick slightly open (it was supported on only two edges in that position) , was rapped with just a knuckle and 'popped' into a million pieces, right into the face of the person seated there.

So for some tempered glass, even a little hit could 'pop' the glass.. And because of the internal stress, the glass could explode 'up' even if hit from small rock outside.
This is my 2 cents.

I think she will have a hard time getting Ford to replace it unless it becomes a very obvious widespread issue. If not, its just a broken window and glass breakage is not covered under warranty.

Ford could have fixed this for a few dollars, but rather they chose to screw the customer and now they are getting millions in free advertising on why NOT to buy a Ford.

Realistically, would this one incident prevent you from buying a Ford?

When Toyota was dealing with the "unintended acceleration" that would not have prevented me from buying one (there were plenty of other reasons not to buy a Toyota).

The defect, no.
They way that Ford handled it, yes.

One of the major selling points of a new car is the warantee, if I get the impression that that warantee isn't worth the paper it's printed on, that brand just lost a major selling point.

Probably isolated incident. Sucks if insurance doesn't cover it. In MA we have glass coverage free. $0 deductible

But I've only personally seen this once. Apparently my neighbor's Honda Accord's rear window exploded one morning when he started the car.
