Okay, I was lowering my wife's MZ3 Skyactiv today and her clunk is more of a scrunch and I now know why. Mazda did not put any rubber isolator in the spring seat! Her stock springs are very stiff and are the same coil thickness as the MS3 springs on my Focus, just taller. The strut mounts are exactly the same as the Focus. Her strut towers have the strengthening plates...

thinking about trying to cut out some "plates" outta some dense rubber and drilling holes in it to put under my STB to see if that helps the noise, and be a cheap easy fix possibly, untill Zillion finds out if this new brace fixes the issue. Im thinking the plate helps isolate the brace from the body reducing noise. If so rubber plates might do the trick.

Rubber plates will prob give you a problem getting and maintaining correct torque.

I'm reading all these posts and patiently hoping those of you clearly smarter than me are gonna help fix this clunking and also make Ford wish they had engineers as proactive as you all have been.

Zillon in particular...dang dude. Keep it up. We're all gonna have to put you on our Christmas lists at some point.

Rubber plates aren't the answer.

The strut towers need a stiff reinforcing plate to potentially prevent deformation and premature strut bearing/mount wear, but by mounting the strut to a solid foundation, it helps quell vibrations (i.e., the clunk) and also helps eliminate any extra slop in the handling.

I would hold tight and wait to see what the addition of the updated strut tower brace does for the noise. My car was pretty loud tonight after the warmer weather we had today. If the strut bar doesn't fix the noise, I will be replacing the bearings and strut mounts again, and hope they hold this time with the extra reinforcement from the stiffer strut tower brace.

Additionally, I went to the local Ford dealer just to check the new inventory, and here's what I found just from wandering the lot and popping the hood on unlocked cars:

2013 ST, SE, and SE appearance package vehicles have the reinforced strut brace. Also, the SE trim level comes standard with the alloy lower suspension arms.

I have an ST that doesn't have the plate! And in fact I hear a clunking noise from the front suspension over bumps sometimes.

I would post pics, but for some reason I'm not allowed to post attachments...

You can host them on a photo hosting site such as photobucket.

I'm hesitant to believe your claim until I see photographic proof, though.

The Ford ETIS site says the build date was this:
14.08.2012

I'm guessing that means August 14th.

This is my VIN: 1FADP3L91DL126547
