Weird sound from engine

This noise has been happening for as long as i've owned the car(about 3 years now). It only happens sometimes though. I find that the noise gets louder as rpm increases rather than speed. Over the 3 years i've owned it, the noise hasn't got any worse. Anyone know what it might be?

I'd say it's your timing chain, tensioner & chain guides. Check your tensioner & chain guide's. While your there, I'd be pulling out your balance shafts also= add a bsd plug too. It'll hold another 1 qtr of oil, which is a good thing. How many miles?

You could as there would be slack in the chain, & that would affect the cam timing.

Slack in a chain or belt won't affect cam timing as timing is dependent on the number of teeth in either the chain or belt, not the relative length or tautness. The relation between the cam and crank remains 2 revolutions of the crank to every 1 of the cams. However in extreme cases of say a tensioner completely failing it will cause the motor to run like crap purely because the crank accelerates and then there is a delay on when the cams turn because that slack must be taken up. Often the motor won't run at all.

If there is a bad tensioner in your car, it probably isn't affecting how the car runs, at least at this time. Hydraulic tensioners can tend to make knocking sounds if they are failing.

Is it normal for this to last so long? Like i've said, i've had the car for 3 years now with the noise coming on and off. It hasn't got any worse.
