Its tough to be a leader w.r.t technology and features. People are resistant to change, especially people who like "beige" cars. Somebody has to break new ground and take the risks.
It sure would be easy to top the reliability charts when you're a late follower, and your mainstream model, ie. Corolla, comes with an ancient (read: we know it works because we've been using it for the last 15 years) 4 speed automatic torque converter transmission

Mostly every major review site/magazine/publication in the world has had issues with the DCT. Not just the initial batch either. I've had my car at the dealership 6+ times for the issue and they refuse to do anything about it (3 dealerships in the area). The shudder is *bad*. I've driven 15+ cars (most likely 20+) that have a dual-clutch transmission, 3 of them with dry clutch varieties. This is not the "norm" for dual-clutch transmissions...it's an issue with the software that Ford created to handle the shifting patterns and the learning mode. Please, tell me I should drive my car differently. Try and make the point that the way I drive should influence whether the car performs well or not. No learning mode, no matter how sophisticated, should *EVER* be able to learn in a way that reduces the efficiency or longevity of the engine. If the transmission has learned in a way that is actually doing damage to the drivetrain, in any way, it is *faulty*. It shouldn't be possible. The problem *does* still exist, and Ford refuses to look into it. That's why their customer service rating is low. |

And I just left a nasty review for my last dealer visit explicitly stating I know they're giving people the run-around for this issue (in addition to my car's oil being under-filled at the dealership). If Ford isn't going to pay/rate their dealers well for doing warranty work, their dealers certainly aren't going to get good reviews.

2012 SE, 5-speed manual, sport, no MFT and I had only one warranty repair because my parking brake boot came loose. 29,500 miles, and it's a great ride.

Bought one of the first 2012's on my dealer's lot and mine has been running perfectly since day 1. Love both the MFT and DCT. Could they benefit from improvements? Sure, but it does everything I want it to do. Greatest car I've ever owned and I've had plenty!

I think we can all agree that the 2012 Focus caused the Crusades, the plagues, the dark ages, the death of Kennedy, it has the missing watergate tapes, it convinced us to invade Iraq and it clubs baby seals in its spare time.
