2000 zx3 driver side door handle loose and won't open door

As the title says, my 2000 zx3 driver side door handle is vvery loose and it won't open the door from the outside. The door handle has no resistance at all when pulled and it doesn't return to its original position (it just stays pulled and you have to push it back in). It's as if some cable inside is disconnected or something. I can still open the door from the inside though. I go to the passenger side and open the door from the inside (that sure is annoying though). This happened to this car before but my mother, who was using the car at the time, just did something to the door, like close it some weird way a few times to fix it. Now its back and I want to know what could be the cause of this so I can fix it right once and for all. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you
