Interesting thread. I was driving yesterday and thinking to myself that if this DCT and its quirks were on a $100,000 sport sedan it would be one of the 'coolest' features of the pricey, exclusive, look-at-me-I'm-rich car. As it is, since it is in an economy car it is the worst thing since the Edsel!

Kinda funny actually.

Ehh, when the Maserati Quattroporte first came out, it was only available with a single clutch automated manual. Everyone hated it because it was rough and unresponsive. The automatic option that came along a few years later is generally accepted as the one to get.

I often drive coach buses with a ZF AS-Tronic transmission. It's a 12-speed single clutch automated manual... attached to a 13L I-6 turbodiesel engine with about 1400 ft-lb torque. You think cars shudder and shake in slow speed driving...

The DCT in my Focus is a dream! :3

that's why all our cars in my family are MANUAL'S , 2012 Focus, 54. F-100 (V-8), and 74 Mustang (V-8), all sticks, might be getting a 2004+ Explorer (auto, but no choice there).

hah yeah, you can really get those things rocking and rolling while trying to crawl along in traffic.. or reversing. The technology in them is more than a few years old now, so they're not nearly as intelligent as new automated-manual transmissions.
ie, sometimes when you just want to crawl along a little bit, you give it a bit of throttle to make the clutch grab just a bit... but sometimes it'll want to finish its clutch engagement and you lurch forward a lot and have to jam on the brakes :p Fun times.
