I live 40 miles south of Canton, OH.

www.centralohiosubarus.com is the local enthusiast site around here. Good forum, knowledgeable people, good dealer support, and a couple of really good independent specialist shops.

I'm originally from Pittsburgh! I just go to school in Rochester. If I end up selling the Subie I'll let you know.

You could also say the same thing going the other way. First, I wouldn't consider Subaru in the same reliability tier as Honda and Toyota, and second, I would agree with you if we were talking about cars from a decade ago. But Ford has come a long way and that's why my Focus is my first domestic car.

Take a look at these rankings : http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...ity-study.html. A caveat is that is for 2009 model year vehicles; I imagine Ford will drop a little bit when you include in some of the more recent model year cars, like the MK3 Focus, that have had some teething problems. But my point still stands that today's Ford isn't a reliablity basement bottom dweller anymore.

Exactly the reason why I'm even considering Ford over Subaru! This site is absolutely amazing too, which is another plus to getting a Focus.

This, mostly.

I'd say the Impreza is comparable to a lower-end model of Focus, but comparing the Titanium or ST models to the Impreza is a bit unfair...at that point they should be compared to the WRX.

Comparing my Titanium to a WRX is an almost-unfair comparison. Some parts of the interior feel cheaper than the Titanium, but the car definitely performs better (not just acceleration, but the transmission). It's got the same bhp as the ST, but the weight distribution and clutch feel is great in the WRX...vastly superior to the Focus.

It's just too bad that I had to buy the Titanium before they offered it in stick...the DCT is *not* what I'd consider to be ideal.

I would have liked to have the paddle shifters my rental Subi had over the button on the shifter.

As for the Ford vs Honda/Toyota/Sub. Only the Subi gets the nod in our house. Both my Toyota turned into crap, and the other half's Honda needed a new trans at 38k and 72K.

The past four Fords in this house were trouble and rattle free.

Came across this thread searching for another one and wanted to add some more to it.

We have had the Impreza for just over a year now. Its combined mpg is just under 30 mpg after 20k miles. My Focus is still averaging 32 mpg combined after 21k miles and a year and a half.

To comment about winter performance. The Focus would have done well, imho, if not for the stock Continential tires. At 15k they did not perform well at all in the snow. With snow tires this coming winter I will see how it goes.

The Impreza on the other hand was the car I drove when it was snowing. Not a problem at all. It was very composed and balanced in the snow. I was able to have some fun with it but not to much because of the stability control. It would just go up a snow covered hill from a stock where as the Focus had a lot of trouble. Keep either moving it was fine. Again I think this has a lot to do with the tires.

Overall I am impressed with the Impreza as well as the Focus. Everything that was pointed out before still hold true.

@ BrApple:

My experience has been almost exactly the same when it comes to mpg and winter driving. We're still very happy to own both these cars.

Same report with 30k on the Focus and 10k on the Imp. Only getting 27 on the Imp, but it's a 5 speed and and does all short trips. The one time I ran a tank through it on the highway, I got @ 31mpg.
