2005 ford focus 2Litre duratec high idle when cold

my car is an automatic and when i put it into drive or reverse its alittle clunky. I don't have a tacometer but i can tell the idle is high and takes 2 or more minutes to settle down. I read that ford did this for emission reasons but i was wondering if there's anyone has similiar issues and a fix. thanks

my 2005 5 speed does the same thing. it is normal. I have heard it can be taken out with a tune,but i don't have the mods to support that yet,so I just deal with it. Of course it is easier to deal with with a manual tranny,but I still think it sucks.

is the tune expensive? is it something i can do? i assume it has something to do with the mapping.

xcal3 flasher/tune will run you around $400 and it is something you can do on your own. That price is for the xcal (which you use to flash a tune to your ecu) and a custom tune provided by the place that sells you the tune. They will customize your tune based on what you want and what mods you have to your car, they can change many of the parameters to your car's ecu mapping.

The two more popular tuners are Focus-Power (1turbofocus aka Tom) and fswerks.com, research both if you are considering buying a tune.

It's the car's way of warming up. It'll be high for a couple minutes then the RPMs should drop back to normal. Both my Explorer ATX and Focus MTX do that.

The emissions controlled fords (newer) seem to be MUCH more prone to the high idle issues.

My Focus routinely idles at 1500RPM (it's normal) and our F350 has never idled below 1500. My Taurus would idle at 2500RPM on cold start ... all are considered to be "normal"
