I'd assume brake booster but I can't say for certain. Best bet is to talk with the mechanic again and see what the operation of the hose is. The give the local dealership a call and see what the part costs.
Unknowns like this, I don't advise internet buying. If the part happens to be wrong it creates more downtime and headache.

not sure what's so "unknown.". its the vacuum hose that goes to the brake booster. the only booster a mechanic would know about on a gasoline engine. its a vacuum hose. if its split it sucks in air and kills the idle.

Unknown being the actual part. There are 4 different lines his car could have. The SPI, zetec, SVT and Duratec were all available in 2003. All of which use a different brake booster line.

And that's assuming the line is actually bad in the first place.

Yes, it also has all the marks of mechanic possibly yanking it out and just saying it's broken. May not be broken at all, he may not realize if parts still good all one does is reinsert hose in fitting. Or fitting broken and actually needs new intake since not available separately...............unknowns aplenty.

Like someone was mentioning in recent posting, they do not ever give enough information the first time, you gotta drag it out piece by piece.

amc I think I get what you're saying... you're thinking maybe the nipple on the intake or booster broke off?
