2008 with bad security system?

ive been trying to fix my sister 2008 Focus and last night i had a buddy bring his scanner over and apparently the security brain is shorted out and needs to be replaced. He told me 1200 dollars for it and its a tiny four inch box? If the secruity brain is bad is it really 1200 dollars, i tried Google and i cant find anything about it for prices?
