Windshield defrost mode mod

If you’re like me and you don’t want the A/C compressor running every time and all the time when you select the windshield defroster then here’s the solution. (The A/C comes on in defrost mode even thought the indicator doesn’t illuminate)

Pull out the HVAC bezel and behind the vent selector there’s a plug with two black/yellow wires, this plug automatically kicks the A/C on in defrost mode. Unplug it and it’s done!

If you need the A/C for defrosting then manually push the “A/C” button. In some conditions you need the A/C to defrost and sometimes you don’t, I’ve been using this mod for a few weeks and I haven’t needed it yet. The compressor really bogs down the SVT, and I'm saving some MPG.

Cool, I've always hated that it runs even if you turn the a/c button off. Used to sap so much power from Yeller' back in the day before most of the mods I have now. Of course now I hardly notice the a/c on, though in my SVT it's not as bad as the other focus was but it's noticeable.

Wonder how similar the 2012's will be...wouldn't mind disabling the compressor for defrost.

Hi guys, it's my first post here. I'm really interested in doing this mod, but I looked quickly at my car and can't seem to find a safe way to remove the panel to get access to the back of the knobs. looks like all one big piece that surrounds the radio as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I have a 2005 ZX5 SES

It's cool that you found what you needed. It's a little different for the 00-04, but most here people have taken the bezel out for painting or a radio install. (Remove the radio and undo the four 7mm bolts)

Plus my bezel is custom and it takes a slightly different removal process, so me taking pics of that part wouln't help anyone else.
