new (used) car, radio swap and unidentified wire.....

Hi all,

Well me and the wife now have a matching (almost) pair of focii.

A while ago we got her a cheap Focus 1.8l Zetec estate, she loves the car and I recently treated myself to a Focus 1.8l Ghia estate.

Anyhow, I wanted to fit my DAB radio from my old car into the focus, and as the wife only had a cassette player in hers, I swapped the CD-radio from mine along with the steering column controls into the zetec. this was all fine, then I found I could not get a wiring harnes to go from the ford wiring to the standard ISO connectors, so it was out with the wiring diagrams, soldering iron and heatshrink.

Well I have managed to get my DAB cd-radio into the focus and all working well, but I have a spare wire, a think gauge Orange with black stripe wire that I could find no reference to in the wiring diagram, I have just insulated it with heatshrink for now and put it out of the way, but would like to know what this wire is actually for. Of the 3 radio plugs, it was in the plug that carries all the power connections, so i assume nothing to do with the remote controls or speakers.

So far, unlike the wifes focus when we got it, this one seems to have no issues whatsoever, allthough it has not been cold enough yet to know if the heated screens work.

I dont think so, as there was one on the wiring diagram that came off of the lightswitch, I took this to be the dimmer wire. But then I could be wrong myself as the car is a 2003 and I was working from a haynes manual listed for 1998-2002 cars.

I will have to go out and try that tonight and see if the 'dim' actually works on the radio.

Moved to Car Audio and Electronics.

You should get a better answer here, although Mike is usually pretty good.

Just did my radio swap yesterday. Orange should be dimmer, which I'm not even sure the focus has. In any model anywhere, US or Euro. And I didn't plug anything into it either, so you should be good!
