The ST and the GTI are the only ones really worth buying in the hot hatch segment.

The only thing cheaper and still 80% as good is the Veloster Turbo, but its not as sharp in the handling or the interior trim, hence it giving up 10%.

And LOLOLOLOL @ the person who said buy a Honda for reliability.

Statistically speaking, every single brand even VW plays with the averages in terms of reliability and issues. The people on these forums elevate such issues to near mythical status and no disrespect to those that actually have issues but we ARE NOT the majority. We are the minority and even then we are only the ones who chose to speak out about it and report such things.

So yea, go with your gut. I've driven both and while its a damn hard choice you won't regret it either way.

I'd say the ST simply because it takes a sledgehammer to the GTIs balls, since the GTI has basically been the textbook hot hatch for a long time, and its incredible fun to drive and I think it just works better but many people will argue that the GTI still holds its own.

You can't go wrong either way but I should mention that with the new Mark 7 GTI coming out soon you will feel like an ass for buying the GTI right now given a more powerful model coming down the line.

In the grand scheme of things...

RWD (with winters if you need them) > AWD > FWD.

Can't beat the dynamics of a RWD car.

The MKVI GTI is a slight revision of MKV. Almost all the changes were just cosmetic. The reliabilty should be excellent (for a VW), because the platform has basically been out since 2005.

Both cars will be expensive to maintain compared to Civics and Corollas. Be ready to pay higher prices for oil changes, brakes, tires, recommended service, etc. Winter tires/wheels are a must. The GTI does have extremely expensive 40K service, especially if you go with a DSG.

The MKVII US GTI will most likely be made in Mexico instead of Germany. Another point for the ST.

i think he meant the mid west where it snows... tx, ok and much of ks don't get much snow (but lots of ice)... i also think tht those of us living in other regions view (slightly) tx and ok as the south more than mid west, which brings images of what one would see in WI, MN, IA, etc.. just my 2 cents lol

My concern is the problems that it might have. I mean it has MFT, so right there you know there are problems. It does not have the DCT, so right there you know there are less problems. They are all about the same price.

So what do you guys think?
Problems? The ST production just started up recently so potential problems are unknown at this point. Certainly there is more to go wrong under the hood.

You should at least test drive the GTI and anything else that you might be considering. In reality, there are many nice cars that you could be looking at so it's best to keep an open mind and not fixate on one car.
