I've never tried the launch mode and doubt I ever will.
I do use "S" mode manual all the time, however, as it's a good way to limit unnecessary gear changes when cruising on rolling roads. For example, if I'm cruising at 60mph on gentling rolling roads in "D" mode the car will tend to downshift when climbing even a slight grade but if I have it in "S" mode manual and put it in 6th (manual) the car will not downshift unless the speed drops too much. I'll leave it in 6th unless it drops a few mph then thumb-shift down as needed. Additionally, in "D" mode it will downshift going down a hill if the speed increases even a little above cruise setpoint, but in "S" mode manual it will not down shift unless you do it. Brian

It probably is a launch control. Why not program that into a DCT? It probably isn't mentioned because Ford doesn't want to replace a lot of clutch packs under warranty. They can still claim misuse or abuse since they did not state it as a feature of the car, same as if you did the same frequently with a manual shift Focus. The rpm's do seem right for a good, not too aggressive launch, about the same as you would do with a manual.

This is for all intents and purposes launch control without having a button for it, I believe 2011 Audi S4s also do just this. No button, you just press the brake in any mode and press the gas.
If you were just pressing brake and gas as you do at a stop, it won't go above 1k. This is the safety cutoff and eventually you'll get brake override. But if you bury the brake the RPMs will shoot right up and settle, just in the perfect spot for a nice launch. It certainly pulls better off a start when you do it.

A secret hand shake and a bit of fun for the engineers to sneak that past the bean counters to take advantage of the dual clutch transmission is unlikely? Considering it seems to set the car up for a quicker launch than just matting the accelerator pedal it seems more likely that it is a form of launch control rather than just a self preservation mechanism. After all if you matted both the gas and the brake while driving its supposed to cut off the throttle via brake override.
