4:10 in the first video is an epic shot. Shows the ridiculous speed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVXc29ZgutI (GUY Martin TT Isle of Man Lap on-board Honda 1000 from 2007)

Guy Martin is one crazy dude! Damn, is his accent thick. IOW, what in the hell is Guy saying? I love his attitude towards racing and life!

"TT3D : Closer To The Edge" is a FANTASTIC movie about the the Isle of Man TT. It is a must watch movie if you love motorcycle racing!

+Eleventy billion! Was it two years ago that he crashed and his bike exploded into a ball of fire? CRAZY.

I can't believe today is the first I've heard of this movie. It will be a goal of mine to get it this week!

The other truly insane race I believe is the famous Dakar Rally. But more specifically for the guys running it on motorcycles. Not 110% flat out like the TT, but 16 days of life on the line with thousands of things that can go wrong along the way. Like the TT I believe I read (for both events) that loss of life is typical on average each year.

This book was where I learned what Dakar is all about and found it quite shocking.

If you're looking for another great motorcycle film, check out "long way around" starring Ewan McGregor, aka Obi Wan Kenobi. He goes all the way around the world on a BMW gs. Pretty cool. He also has one called long way down, in which he goes all the way down the European and African continents. Also, pretty cool.

Dust to glory is a awesome movie as well it talks about the Baja 1000. The bike, trophy trucks and everything. But it follows the riders who ride the entire thing solo through the entire film.

I've read those books and seen the shows as well. They were pretty damn good. But it was later on when I read about people who did similar trips solo without modern technology or reliability that Ewan and Carlie's trips seemed much less impressive with their following support crew, satellite phones, etc.

"Jupiters Travels" by Ted Simon. The story takes place back in the early 70's. An Englishman makes a 4 year round world trip on a Triumph Tiger 500. With British reliability of the day the engine was good for an expected 10,000 miles before a rebuild. That was a truly solo journey in an age with no modern communications, no one to call for help when things go wrong, etc. Keep in mind to that 3rd world areas were even less developed than they are now at that time.

Ted Simon later did the trip again as an old man in is 70's on a BMW bike and wrote another book about it.

Having owned and lightly raced sport bikes back in my younger days I can say

These videos are soo scary for me to watch now, the speed and bumps. Easy to get in to a tank slapper and become a decoration on one of those fences or buildings lining the course.

These Guys are such good riders, they make toying with death (e.g: Jumping off bumps at 170+mph) look easy.

I love the Isle of Mann TT.

Its a must watch for me.

I may have to pick up that book, Supernaut. That sounds like an amazing read. My dad and I want to ride across the length of southern Africa, From Durban SA to somewhere like Luderitz, Namibia or possibly through Windhoek over to Walvis Bay. Most likely we'd fly into cape town then ride the South African southern coast up to Durban. That road is by far one of the most breathtaking scenic drives I've ever seen. Its nothing compared to what these folks have done, but it still should be an amazing ride.
