No, I'm far from any industrial areas.. Just doesn't seem right!

Any ideas on how quickly this needs to be fixed before permanent damage occurs?

I would probably recommend doing the full detail. Iron-X, clay, wash, polish, wash, wax or seal. That being said, I think that the Iron-X should dissolve most of the metal particles.
