To get a decent 1st gen you will have to spend between 2 - 3 thousand. As long as you stay away from SPI's you'll be fine. Get one made after 2002 because they updated the fuel pump, alternator and I believe the wiring as well. Before 2002 I have seen those early fuel pumps destroy Zetec's

Them money you save by buying the cheapest focus you find, is not really saved money. It is just money you get to spend later on parts.

I am not a big fan of having my woman drive a car that I need to repair frequently. I am a mechanic, it's not that the labor or such is a hassle, it just makes the ownership experience less satisfying for the woman when the car needs to be serviced frequently. They don't like that, they will mistreat the car because it "sucks" and they don't trust it, then they don't tell you about the little problems until they become big problems....

Just find a Focus that isn't totally clapped out for sale at junkyard prices, then you will enjoy not having to fix a bunch of tiny little issues. My '04 focus has been reliable enough for my wife to drive, if I ever let her.

i just bought a very nice 02 zx5, but it was 5200. i have not seen any for 1 or 2 thousand. sorry, just my observation after lots of internet research. you will immediately be facing a timing belt change, at least $400.

There's a 2002 sedan on CL in Westport. They're asking $1500.00. It has 169K miles. The listng is from 9/13/12. On think it's on the Boston CL.
