Next-Gen Volkswagen GTI to Get Performance Pack

In June of next year, the seventh-generation Volkswagen GTI will be launched on the European market, and it will arrive in the U.S. market in the first quarter of 2014. Europe will get an interesting option: For the first time, a factory performance package will be offered, but it’s not yet certain if it will come to the U.S.

The new car will be lighter by nearly 200 pounds, and horsepower—at least for the European market—will increase from 210 hp to 220. In the U.S., the GTI currently produces 200 hp, and sources tell us it will receive a significant bump in output—the U.S.-market figure is not yet finalized. Like the current model, the next GTI will be fitted with an EA888 2.0-liter TSI engine.

A 10-hp bump is not all that’s included in the European-market performance package, though. We’re told that the package will include a limited-slip differential—the standard GTI must make do with XDS, a brake-based function of the stability-control system that mimics a mechanical limited-slip diff. Considering the next GTI is a lot lighter than the outgoing model anyway, VW isn’t concerning itself with further weight savings in this performance package. But it will include a few more “goodies,” we are promised.

Would not touch a V-Dub, don't get me wrong they got the styling down but not reliability. I think there's* better cars out on the lots. Just my opinion...

Didn't what's his name from the SVT program move over to VW not too long ago?

I like the predictions they gave for the next Golf-R:
300hp, AWD, 6-speed, 2-door hatch

Agreed, This is my dream hatch. If its not credulously expensive, i'd buy it.

That can't be true. Germany can't make a bad car, they are the best in the world. My uncle Fritz had a 84 diesel golf that went 800,000 miles, and he still drives it in bratwurst season. You drive an American piece of crap? What is wrong with you? And Volkswagens are tough! What do you think is going to happen to you when you get your American car in a crash?

Sieg Heil!

Ok, I've delt with a few VW/German car enthusiasts in my time. And while there are some VW's I'd really like in my driveway, that sort of existing culture turns me away from the name. Same with Chevy and some of the meat headed zealots connected to it. Don't get me started with Harley-Davidson motorcycles....

Food for thought.... what does any car made in 1984 have anything to do with a car's expected reliability rolling out of a factory today?
