I got a nasty letter a couple of weeks ago from the NJ Dept. of the Treasury (Division of Taxation). They demanded to know why the amount of sales tax I paid when I bought my car was so much lower than the amount they're entitled to given their estimation of my car's value. Apparently, they've never heard of a trade in. At any rate, I finally got in touch with a genuine human being today, and she told me that the state of NJ, in its infinite wisdom, is now requiring all people who register a car in NJ to send them documented proof that they've paid enough sales tax. I told her that my dealer had already sent that information to the state when they registered my car. True, she said, but they sent that information to DMV. This is Treasury, and the two apparently don't communicate very well. Has anyone else gotten one of these?
