Yeah, that's exactly why I compared the MPG of my old Focus to new, rather than to the EPA estimates. Both of the cars have been driven similarly.

I'm still too much of an enthusiast to consider a hybrid at this point in my life, but maybe that will change someday. Efficiency definitely takes the back seat to dynamics for me, but it's nice to have both.

In my brief experience with ownership of a focus, this car gets great gas mileage in the city. I see between 31 to 34 when I'm granny shifting (following the ecco mode shift recommendations). When ignore it and shift when I feel like it... 27 - 29 mpg. I've seen as low as 25 and as high as 63 coasting on a long down hill stretch. This car could really benefit from a sixth gear.

Er, looking back, I think my comments regarding the hybrids were more in response to Raptor. I must have read several posts and merged them together in my head. Anyway, I didn't think you were bashing the Focus; quite the contrary I thought people were being too easy on it. It sounded like the suggestion was that we shouldn't expect good stop and go mileage because the Focus is not a hybrid. It goes without saying that a hybrid will achieve great mileage in stop and go traffic compared to just about any gas car. But that doesn't mean that gas cars aren't subect to their own standards for city driving. As a c-segment car, the Focus should be held to a very high standard of city mileage. The fact that there is a superior segment--hybrids-- doesn't let the Focus off the hook.

sel picked up on June 25th '12. Daily driver with 4778 on odo. Been doing a study that need 2 more tanks before publishing. Highest on screen display was 42.7 mpg, only lasted about 38 miles. Now with each tank I reset 'trip2'. This has been getting me 32mpg on Costco's 87 grade octane pumped at the same pump at approx. the same time of day and parked in the same spot Hoping to figure out how to make it go up. Maybe as the temps cool here in Orlando. More to come.

200 mile round trip commute at average of 95 kph gives me 6.1 L/100km. Very consistent

Ours gets about 31 mpg in the city - mostly stop and go commute. It averages 33-35 on the highway depending on how much throttle I apply.

Quick update after my first oil change. My mileage went up to 27 combined, however since that oil change it has been almost entirely city. prior it was 24mpg. So it's starting to get better. I did the oil change at 3k miles, from what I've been reading this car takes up to 5k, so I'll likely do another oil change around 6k before switching to 5k oil changes.

As for my avg daily commute. It's 4.8miles. There are about 5 traffic lights and there is a highway stretch for 1 mile of it. The next long segment is about 1.2 miles of 35/45 speed limit.

I think its just a bad route for this car. Once I take a highway trip, I'll update again.

In 4.8 miles, the car is barely warmed up. No wonder your mileage is not great. My wife has a 10 mile commute and even in stop and go both ways, she is getting around 31 mpg.

Yeah, I know, thats why IU wanted to clarify the route. It was still a disappointment compared to the Mazda3, which was rated for 24/32, I got dead in the middle on the same commute. This car was 28/38. So it's at least it's now approaching the lower spectrum. It definitely improves on highway. When I picked it up from the dealer (1st free service), that was a 15mile highway stretch, going 70ish, I saw it go up to 31mpg.

I've got a baby due any day now, so I won't have much highway stuff anytime soon, but I am expecting the highway trips to be where the savings where. Should have gotten the Prius C for the short commute!
