i had an o7 hatch. traded it off. had a variety of cars. did a lot of looking, settled on a dark blue 02 zx5. replaced timing belt. synthetic oil. replaced shocks and struts. car is like new, in some ways better than my 2011 kia forte. 92,000 miles. i am very happy.

On the good side, Duratec engined versions in reasonable shape should be coming into your price range now...

+1 you should be able to find a Mk1.5 in your price range. I had a 07 with the 5 spd and loved it. Still wish i hadnt got rid of it.

Hope you can find the right focus for you this time around. And I agree with what sailor has said, see if you can find a duratec in your price range.

However, as a former SPI owner, I do want to clarify some information that was given last time you posted. The SPI is notorious for a valve seat, but a remanufactured head prevents the problem. Other than this one major flaw they are bulletproof engines and got the best gas milage of any focus of that generation.

If you can find an SPI with a new head, it will probably be cheaper, just as reliable, and more fuel efficient than any other focus. Or you could buy an SPI, replace the head yourself for about $300, and still be under the price for a zetec or duratec. Finally, you can buy an SPI with a dropped valve seat, put $800 into parts, and walk away with a great car for half of what the other engines would cost. If you can put the work in, the SPI's can be a great deal.
