Car and Driver's 1st Drive review of the Accord says most of the traditional CVT complaints don't apply, you generally don't notice the CVT and it's finally one you can live with.

I'm not a CVT proponent, just sayin' don't complete count them out just yet.
We just traded my wife's Nissan Rouge and I can tell you I hated driving it! Constant drone all the time! I will say the transmission was smooth and always seemed to be in the right "gear" or should I say ratio for the situation. So for that I was very pleased, but that constant noise was too much.

I will agree the idea behind them makes a lot of sense.

Looking through the actual powertrain complaints, I count roughly 70% of them specifically mention the typical DCT complaints you hear about on here; shuddering, bucking, lunging, poor shift quality, engine bogging down in turns, etc.

I ignored complaints about hill roll back since I'm on the side of that not being a case of poor implementation on Ford's part. It is what it is.

I noted the cars that were in their first model year for more direct comparison.

Notice the Veloster, also with a DCT, has negligible powertrain complaints.

Complaints
Total Powertrain
2011 Jetta 164 19 1MY
2012 Focus 153 56 1MY
2011 Cruze 143 30 1MY
2010 Mazda3 93 13 1MY
2012 Civic 58 13 1MY
2012 Cruze 55 9
2011 Elantra 40 3 1MY
2012 Jetta 40 5
2012 Veloster 40 3 1MY
2012 Elantra 33 5
2012 Mazda3 10 3 1MY w/ Skyactive

Sorry, formatting wasn't the same as when i was writing the post. The first number after each model name is total complaints and the second number is complaints specifically about the powertrain which of course includes the transmission.
You can correct me if I am wrong however, but the Veloster and the Focus are the only ones with the DCTs, not sure if the Jetta can be had with the DSG; I believe it only has the Tiptronic sport mode in the regular autobox

And for a lot of people the nuances of the DCT are not explained and for pretty much 99% of us on this forum this would probably be your first encounter with a SMG/DCT type transmission.

That is correct.

Wanna fix your DCT and Powershift woes......put a torque converter in it.

Oil contamination. It is a known problem.

I understand that it could happen, however how common is this v.s. the number of complaints for gears grinding and other odd behavior that most of the gearboxes do not seem to exhibit?

That sounds like a terrible idea, why not just replace it with a 6F35 instead if you're going to mate an awful and inefficient torque converter to the car vs a clean dry dual clutch setup.

If a torque converter says you don't care about driving, a CVT says you've given up.

CVTs are hands down the worst things I've ever experience. Useless revving, fake ratios, constant drone, what's the point?

I'd rather have a well sorted ZF 8 speed over a CVT.
That is your opinion and I respect that. This CVT I had was on a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander V6 with 220HP, and quite frankly I never experienced ANY quirkyness or strange behavior from this CVT in 4 years of ownership. Did the Cabot trail twice, back and forth and racked 75000Km on it and it was smooth as silk and rocketed off a red light (on 4x4 lock) like a bomb.

You see, in my position, I could exaclty say the same thing about my DCT. This DCT type of transmission is by far, in my point of view, the worst piece of modern engineering I have ever used. But that's probably because mine is faulty and my dealer refuses to admit it.

All I'm saying is that ''my'' DCT is bad. I'm not saying that ALL DCT's are bad. Also, no kind of transmission will ever seperate me from my testies, ever. To each is own.
