Question Are there any questions?

Hey guys,

So after having my car for a while I have very few complaints and overall I am happy with Das Auto. But I do have a few questions/comments and I want to know what you think. Here is my list:

1. I have heard (not researched) that newer cars are actually more efficient with their AC on vs. their windows down because of the extra drag. Anyone know which is better on the second generation focus? I believe it would be better with windows down simply because the engine is powering 1 less thing and our cars are not that aerodynamic in the first place.

2. What is up with my gas tank? When I fill up I like to FILL UP, usually only stopping when gas is at the tip top of my tank. But in the Focus, the pumps always stop ~1-1.5 gallons short of a completely full tank. I am thinking this is an environmental feature so people don't have that little squirt of gas that spills onto the ground. I didn't actually think this until recently when I went to a station that had a sticker saying, Please do not top off your tank, we want to keep fuel in your car not on the ground. Some of my other vehicles I could just let the pump do the work and once it clicked off I wouldn't even be able to squeeze an extra dollar in..... Thoughts?

3. How many people actually use the shift light in MTX's? I tried (for the first time) yesterday to follow it and the RPM's seemed WAAAAY too low for the speed I was going. Is this more for optimal fuel efficiency?

4. One of my dash lights came on:

Door Ajar by DarderSauce, on Flickr

BUT the interior lights do not come on nor does the Door Ajar warning come up on the dash display. Even after re-shutting all the doors and making sure nothing is getting slammed in them the light stays on, what gives? This one just recently happened and I haven't had much time to investigate the cause. What do you think?

To be continued?..... That is all for the moment but I would like to know what some of your questions are as well as answers/comments to the questions I posted on the list above.

Thanks for taking the time to read the post

1. If you're on the highway it is more efficient to use the A/C. If you're in town under 45mph, roll down the windows. The A/C is belt driven so it saps power from the engine. Stop and go traffic with the A/C on will kill your mpg.

2. I have never had this issue. My tank fills up completely every time.

3. The shift lights are designed for maximum efficiency. Rule of thumb - Shift at 2k RPM.

4. If opening and closing all of the doors does not fix it, you may need a dealership visit.

2. Another reason not to "top off"' is to avoid introducing liquid into the hose which directs gas vapors from the tank into a charcoal filter. This is a clean air device. I have read that liquid fuel ruins them.
4. It might also be the trunk lid.

I drive an ATX and when trying to accelerate to 50+ mph I feel it takes forever to get into the next higher gear. Is there any benefit to coaxing the car into higher gear by slightly letting off the gas around 30 mph or should I just let the auto transmission do its thing? Feel likes 2nd gear is really long when accelerating to higher speeds. Is one way any more economical than the other???

Ya usually mine does too but for some reason it didn't. But it worked itself out.

One of the door switches went bad, it's a ford thing. Spray some WD40 in all of the latching mechanisms. That usually buys some time with the switches.
