I usually only get ahold of them to establish a paper trail for when I am performing a large repair and want a little bit of backup as to what I am doing (because warranty often questions why you make large repairs). To be honest I don't think I've written them anything in over 6 months. Its far too hard for them to diagnose noise/vibration/harshness concerns from halfway accross the continent over a computer. Where they get helpful is when you have trouble codes and have already done a pile of electrical tests and give them all your results and go from there.

Sorry I can't help you OP, my focus doesn't clank and I don't think our shop has had to check one out yet. I'll ask our front end guy if he's had to diagnose one but I work right near his bay and don't recall ever seeing one.

........most Ford dealers do have a piece of equipment called "chassis ears". It's a device where you can clamp various probes to different parts of the front end and have someone drive the car while another tech sits in the passenger seat with headphones on. You can switch between the different probes and listen to the clanking/clunking. Based on which probe gives a louder signal, you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Find a dealer who has one of those. It might take a couple road tests and shifting probes around but I find they work pretty good.
I told him to drive to the US not call.[bootyshak[bootyshak

On the right side of the car under the hood is the radiator overfill bottle it is mounted very flimsey you could rattle it just by hitting it with your hand.
Try this . Get a spong and wedge it in between the bottle nd the AC line that runs under it. This woll hod it without movement.Drive it again under the same condition that make the noise and see if it went away. if it went away then you no what is causing it.

Hello,

My clanking definately comes from the suspension. It is metal on metal and it is loud. It is also suspension specific, it feels and sounds that way.

Thank you.

It works

I have had this rattle since new. Tried it today by putting a rag under coolant recovery tank. The rattle is completly gone. I thought for sure it was a bad strut. Thanks for your post you probably saved me numerous trips to the dealer to find this rattle. Ford needs to come out with a more permanent fix.

Me too

I've had my SEL for 1 year, (9500 miles). I took in for the first time for noisy front end
at 950 miles. They said drive it and it should go away. It hasn't. It's been in 4 times and had numerous things done. The first few tries made it worse. The mechanic finally got it back to PITA.

Now they tell me Ford is working on a solution and for me to wait until they call me. I think the plan is to make me give up.

Does anyone know of a Ford Co. number to call and complain? Maybe enough complaints will give them motivation.

I have to say that I love the car, it's my 3rd Focus. My dealership has been great. My only other problem has been that bitchy woman in the MyFordTouch. But this may be my last Focus and maybe my last Ford.

My 2012 sel hatchback has developed this symptom at about 28,000 miles. Taking it to the dealer this week.

I'll add my $USD 0.0002 worth. I recently had what sounds like the precise sound being explained by the OP on a Ford Escort some time after I changed front strut assemblies.

It sounded identical to a front sway bar that has lost its bushings and was clanking against the bushing caps/retainers unabated.

However, in my case it was the single strut nut at the top of the strut where the strut seats against the strut mount (not where the strut connects to the "shock tower / frame). When the struts were changed and out of the car, I had a heck of a time torquing that nut without the strut piston just spinning in the strut. So I pretty much left it figuring where's it going? The weight of the car on the strut mount, and the strut connected to the steering knuckle, I figured no big deal.

I learned, the loud way, it's a big deal.

Have those strut nuts checked for correct torque. Good luck.

Try to go to an independent suspension shop, like those shops that do alignment, ask them about the noise that you're hearing
