I've had my focus for a little over two months and now have 3,000 miles. My combined Fuel is about 24mpg. That's up from 22 when I got it. I do mostly city driving. I have taken it to Wilmington and I got about 31 on that trip. I'm getting an oil change in it tomorrow and am hoping to see better gas mileage.

I previously had a 2010 Mazda 3 2.0L and with my driving I made 26mpg combined. I was hoping to be in the low 30s combined with this. I have been grandma-ing it much more compared to how I drove the Mazda3. Hopefully things will improve asap. So far I am not impressed with my mileage.

You must be doing virtually all stop light to stop light city traffic block after block to get it down that low?

I've really had to struggle to get it below 31 mpg even in town, but my commute to and from work is a mixture of surface streets, 55 mph highways, and 70 mph freeways, although I'm not always driving at 70 either due to traffic or other reasons. 10 mi/dir round trip maybe 2 mi or so on the 70 mi/hr road, then onto the surface street for another 2-3 miles, and another 2-3 mi near the end on the 55 mph highway, then onto surface streets again. This is usually with the a/c on the entire time, sometimes the seat heater, or defrost depending on the weather.

So technically its mixed driving biased towards the city, but its not block to block stop signs and red lights, the car seems especially sensitive to this as far as I can tell.

Are you getting the car into 6th gear around town? If not this might also be a contributing factor. Some were reporting after 12b37 a minimum entry speed for 6th of over 41mph, but others report no change to being able to get into 6th gear automatically at 35 mph at light throttle or steady speeds.

7.9L/100KM is my average....just started using fuelly about 2 tanks ago, so I'd like to compare differences. Working on a bit of hypermiling when my brain isn't telling my lead foot to give'r lol

I'm averaging about 36.5mpg for the 7800 miles I've had the car. I do think the car does not like stop and go driving and the mpg in stop and go is way lower than I'd expect based on highway mileage. But, if I'm in city driving at lower speeds (30-40mph) but don't have to stop a lot I can actually get near 40mpg and sometime better -- around town. OTH, if I am in stop and go the mileage can drop into the low 20's. I suspect the mapping in these situations causes over enrichment and I wonder if the 5sp manual is any different than my 6sp DCT...

Ishsaid looked at it correctly. If they were getting 26 in a Mazda with combined ratings of 27/28 (depending on transmission), then they should be getting roughly 1 or 2 mpgs under the Focus's 31 combined rating. Right now they're a full 7 under which is indeed disappointing.

I didn't say that it was an invalid comparison between their old car, just commenting on how if you are constantly shifting through 3rd and fourth, or riding in either of those gears for an extended period of time it is likely that your efficiency wouldn't be nearly the same as the old car due to the shorter final drive in those gears. I.e. stop and go traffic 0-40 and back over again in short order can decimate the fuel economy and might partially explain the discrepancy. Obviously I don't know the conditions under which they struggle to crack the same mileage as before.

However they are currently 2 mpg under what they used to get in the Mazda 3 under what is probably the same conditions. So I'm not sure how to explain that.

I see your point. I think that's probably pretty much accounted for in the city test cycle which is reflected in city and combined ratings.

Time to re-post on here again ... did another 1000mile road trip, same as last time except:

Last time car was at ~1000miles on odo, cruise at 70 to 75mph 95% of the trip, late October ... averaged 33.5mpg

This time car was at ~8000miles on odo, cruise at 80 to 85mph 95% of the trip, late August ... averaged 30.9mpg.

Same trip in my 2011 GT Mustang averaged 25.9mpg back in June cruising 80 to 85mph. From here on out, the Focus is going to only be used for commuting, no reason to bother with it on road trips...I'll survive with 84% of the gas mileage for a 250% HP boost and a more comfortable car to sit in for 7 hours each way.

At least the Focus still wins for the daily commute with 30mpg avg. and the awesome DCT auto vs. 18.5mpg and a stick in the Mustang.
