I came from a 2008 Taurus X...and before that a sweet 2006 Mazda3 hatch. The T-X was pretty quick and comfy...but handled like a yacht. When I picked up my Focus...we traded in my wife's Freestar for a Ford Flex. She LOVES the Flex. So...we're both happy drivers these days.

I traded a 2003 Highlander for this. The only thing I miss is the space. Absolutely hated that thing(wife's vehicle). I sold my 300zx before.

Traded down from a 2007 E63 AMG. That's 510hp, 6.3L V8. It was an amazing car, but I have a short commute and it was VERY expensive to maintain. Each front brake rotor costs $1000! Crazy, I just couldn't justify driving such a beast every day anymore so I opted for my little Focus. I do miss the raw acceleration of the AMG, but not the gas bill!

I traded in my 2007 F150 FX4 that was loaded and lifted and sittin on $1400 worth of 35" tall tires mounted on factory 20's that got 11.3 mpg highway. my commute is only 105 miles a week and I was spending 80 a week just to feed that monster. I took over the wifes 2011 fusion SEL V-6 and am spending only 50 bucks every two weeks on gas. The wife got the Ti focus.

I sold my 1999 Ford Contour SE since it was getting up there in mileage, I was only getting ~27 MPG and I was tired of taking it in to get worked on every couple of months so I got the Focus. The irony of that statement is not lost on me. So, yes, I was one of those who traded down.

I recently sold my 2008 STI . Loved the car, but i do a fair amount of driving for my commute, and hated putting miles on it. I couldn't have the amount of fun i wanted to with it. Avg about 20 mpg through a week. Anywhere from 1.5 - 2 fill ups per week. 280-300 miles a tank.

Bought this about a month ago, I miss raw acceleration of the sti at times. The focus has it's advantages though. Handles well, good sound system, and MFT is pretty cool.

2012 Ti 5spd fully loaded. Averaging 36 mpg so far, for the month i've owned it. Saving a ton of money in gas. Been great so far.

Similar to the OP, I came from a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT (355 hp V8). It was a mistake to buy that car. It was fast and looked fantastic, sure, but it was heavy, ponderous, and not very engaging with its automatic transmission. Plus the interior was really, really cheap.

I needed to get back into something small and sprightly. Test-drove a Focus S with a manual and was sold. Ordered my my SE Sport and the rest is history.

I traded a 2003 Mustang for my '11 SES Sedan and I can't really determine whether it was a trade down, up, or across...
There's negative and positive for both cars, but I think ultimately the Focus makes up for being a slow little sedan by being economical AND fun to drive.
So I'm going to say it was a trade-up.

Yeah, It definitely sounds like we were in similar situations. My Charger would do 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds and I loved the menacing look, but it was so heavy and cumbersome. It was a total pain to park and the 5-spd auto sucked. I hated that transmission from day 1. I miss the acceleration but there are way more things that I like about the focus, the manual transmission being my favorite.

Since I didn't include it in the original post. Here's a pic of the charger:

I went from a 2008 Mustang BULLITT supercharged with a Roush M90 blower. Put 440 rwhp to the wheels at 420 lbs of tq. It was an awesome car and I put a lot of hard work and love into it, but the money I am saving all around with the focus will allow for me to get bills paid off, get into or build a house, keep the focus for a daily driver and score a Ford SVT Raptor in about 2-3 years! Gotta think down the road.
