Are these functional, do they cut down on noise? Or are they simply for aesthetics?

There was supposed to be some nvh material on the bottom of the part, not a whole lot though. So it should have slightly helped with the injector tick common to direct injected engines, as well as the secondary high pressure fuel pump under the hood.

Installed mine last night...its awesome, really quiets the engine down, and my intake too so that makes me very happy! It should have came from factory with one, plus it is good added protection of the plugs and coils from water too...

Unless you have a connection at Ford, www.partscheap.com is probably the cheapest place to get one. Comes as a kit with the cover, 2 white posts, 1 black post, and 1 nut.

Here's the engine compartment of my Escape. As you can see, it comes with an engine cover. I don't believe Ford stopped installing the engine cover because of temperature issues, it had to do with dollars. This 2.0L turbo runs hotter than the 2.0L Duratec.

I do miss the good 'ol days when an engine was something nice to look at and didn't need a cover. Honda had a nice stock presentation on the Integra Type R's motor with a red valve cover and then a insert cover for the plugs. My Eclipse GSX motor wasn't that pretty.

And you'd never even think of covering an engine from the '60s and '70s but today's engines are definetly function over form and are a collage of wires and plastics and most aren't much to look at.
