Anything built after 3/5/12 was supposed to benefit from the Job 2 upgrades, but only those built after around April 15 or later had the full suite of upgrades, the 4 way head restraints, E85 FFV compatibility, the active grille shutters, and a few other things.

How come some get 40, some 38, and some 37?
Here's the raw EPA data which confirms the differences.

Apparently they're required to use manual shifting mode to some extent if so equipped, which reduces mileage slightly in this car.

More proof that today's automatics can better choose gears for economy than a human ever could????

It's still unclear why the select shift cars' ratings were increased by one to match the non select shift cars somewhere around the Job 2 date.

If I solely drive in S+, with the intent of mpg's (short-shifting a bit), I can easily beat the economy of driving in D by about 3 mpg. Maybe more, if that was my goal.

I just can't stand normal traffic (not the @$$hat-driving idiots) pulling away from me at every light, so I try to just drive 'normal'.

I wish I knew that before buying one, as I would have looked at each window sticker and selected one after that. But, I got lucky and am after that. Even the two others I considered were 5/12.

By the way, if E85 is so vastly inferior in fuel economy to E10, does that mean E10 is much inferior to E0?

By energy content E10 is roughly 3% less energy dense than E0, but some people have reported between a 5%-10% less mpg drop if and when they were able to find E0 fuel to compare. Its just a little bit hard to come by these days since they are trying to force more and more EtOH into regular gasoline to "wean" us from the dependance on foreign oil, reguardless of the fact that it takes oil to grow the crops and to power the equipment that harvests them, so by some calculations its a net energy loser rather than a net benefit.

The cost would have to be greater than 30% less than E10 for E85 to be worth the approximately 1/3 hit in miles per gallon, but usually at most its less than 10% less expensive around here at best, which means its a big waste of money.

I saw (and have copies of) two window stickers which are dated 5/1 and 5/24 and they both say 37.

Mine from 4/23/12 (sticker was actually generated 4/16/12 when the car was invoiced) says 38, and also mentions the Ethanol Flex Fuel Vehicle and the drop in mpg due to this.

My car is an SEL 5-door with selectshift and FFV compatibility.

Odd, can't think of a reason why. Except maybe it's a regional thing, the ratings were changed for cars shipped to certain regions. What else could it be?

I snapped a pic of the first SEL I saw with the increased ratings in early March, the date on the sticker was Feb 28th.

I've perused the Focuses on the lot at the local dealer a few times since then (while waiting to pick up one of my cars from service) and I don't remember seeing 27/37 on any sticker for a long time.

Today I drove some miles on the highway and averaged (an indicated) 41.0 mpg with 87 fuel and AC on and two passengers and 3/4 tank of fuel in 86 degree temp. I will keep a log and try 93 fuel also, and check tire pressure.

Question - when I reset the average mpg, how come it starts at about 25 mpg and then slowly goes up to 40 even if I push reset after it is at cruising speed? It should start at about 40 mpg since I pushed reset after I was theoretically already getting it. It seems like Ford did not implement this feature correctly.
