You loose all shifting functionality.

If it gets stuck in neutral, the tower can be removed without much of a problem. If it gets stuck in gear it can apparently turn into quite the process.

If you are an everyday extreme racer I don't see why you wouldn't do it. If your just a person building your car for weekend fun driving then there's no point IMO

I do believe the pre 2002.5 needed the bolt mod. But the newer style shift towers on the focus really never had an issue.

The shift arms move in a totally different way. And they will swap. You can install the newer style on an older focus. But you will have to change the cables also.

I broke the roll pin yesterday, during a granny shift from first to second. I'm now stuck in neutral, glided over to the side of the road to wait for the tow truck. I'm glad I had free towing through my American Motorcyclist Association membership.

I'll have to take my laptop out to the garage now and show this thread to the car, and prove to it that it didn't break the rollpin, because it never happens...
