I use an adjustable clamp with rubber ends. Put it on tight and pulled straight out. Come out with no problems.

Expecting mine in soon; very glad I caught this thread, this looks like a very inexpensive and very satisfying simple upgrade.

was there a certain position they should be in to make it easier/ less likelyhood of damage? I know of the Jetta you have to turn the dials to their vertical positions and they come out fairly easy

I pulled mine off while pointing all-the-way-left (fan speed) to pointing-straight-up (temp) to all-the-way-left (vent select) with no apparent difference. My pliers kept slipping off with the rag I was using so I wound up going with a thumb and first-finger death-grip and a little bit of side-to-side wiggling.

They are shaped in a half star ... shape, so there is no particular position to place the knobs at. I just pulled mine with mah fingers. Came right out

I pulled mine out with the method suggested: Pliers and soft rag, using a steady and slow pulling method. Do not jerk it out, you risk damaging the rotating peg.
Installing the new dials is as easy as pushing them in, respecting the correct orientation.

I'm really happy with the upgrade.
