I had custom Euro (German) plates made for my 1973 BMW Bavaria when I lived in California. I had them say the exact same thing my Cali plates said. I put them on the car and stuck the cali plates in the trunk. I drove that car for 8 years in Cali and NEVER got pulled over in it for the plates. AND when I got rear ended, the cop just read my number off the plate and said nothing! I guess if they match your real numbers the statute at the time never said you had to have a state issued license plate with the numbers on it! I wonder if I can get away with that here in New Mexico. If so I am ordering a front and rear set for the ZX3.

Nice. Ive seen a couple of cars around with their state tag number on euro plate and the registration stickers on them. I was thinking about getting one of these with my tag number on it http://www.licenseplates.tv/californ...late_7048.html

I don't remember CA law saying "state issued" anywhere so by the wording of the law and as long as its the right number it would be "legal" in CA.
If someone know if/where it does say "state issued" please post it.

All of the cali vehicle statues are a matter of public record so you might be able to just go online and google the license plate statutes. Be ready to read since it is a Cali law! They ( I lived there off and on for 18 years) have the stupidest longest winded dumb traffic and other laws on the books! I am guessing there wil be more then five pages on a license plate alone. I also suggest having a copy of it in the car if it is technically legal for you to still do this. I left Cali in 1995 and then there wasn't a "findable law" against a plate that wasn't state issued. I seem to remember the law only stated front and rear license plates that had the be ledge-able from a certain distance, and a registration sticker.

This is the only part I found that says issued.
5200. (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.

Everything else just say license plate. Its all in how you interpret the law vs how they interpret the law. Everything is so loosely worded.

That is how it was worded when I did it back in like 1989...so it hasn't changed. Probably because no one has ever challenged it. Worded that way it is surely open to interpretation. In fact, what I noticed about that wording doesn't even state they have to be attached outside the vehicle so that is why I put mine in the trunk even though it does say one in front and one in back. I guess if one wanted to be legal by the word of the law, you could put on in the back window and stick the other in the windshield on the dash....and stick the Euro plates in the license holders front and rear.

All of the attachment rules never say "issued" so the word of law never says where your state issued plates need to be attached, only where a license plate needs to be attached. It doesn't specify what kind of plate needs to be attached in the position rules.

5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that the characters are upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground, except as follows:

Yep, my point entirely which is why I never got busted for it with the Euro plates on the Bavaria. BTW here's the pic of my Bavaria before I put the plates on...you can see why I did Euro plates.

I still have my E28 Dinan M535i too and will do euro plates on it as well...here it is.
