Nope,

An E100 Corolla in a GM suit, a.k.a. a 93-97 Geo Prizm Lsi 1.6L 5 speed.

Put the car in gear, and even at the standard idle of 750 rpm if you feathered the clutch just right you can hold it on the bite point just long enough for the car to start moving without giving it any throttle on a level ground, then once it dipped the revs a little bit and caught itself it would then be fine. Now you wouldn't want to slip the clutch all the time like that, but it is possible to launch/ start from zero mph in a manual without applying the throttle with the engine at an idle, sure its easier when the idle speed is raised slightly due to trying to light off a catalyst, but that's not strictly necessary.

Now is it necessarily the best for the longevity of the clutch and engine to allow it to lug and then go, perhaps not, but it is most definately possible even when the car makes less torque than the lug nuts require to stay on.

FLAME ON GUYS!

so, are we to take our cars to the dealership or what? cause I honestly thought digital throttles just suck, and would be thrilled if this was a "fix."

It's not a drag car so they're not implying a drag race launch. It simply means (as defined) to "start or set in motion".

Stick around. You might learn more.

Sorry. I'd call them with the TSB number and make an appointment. Since it's just a TSB they won't send anything in the mail.

You can launch without engaging the accelerator pedal. I used to do it with my 1.8 turbo vw.

And what would that characterization be? You have multiple people telling you exactly what I'm telling you, yet you're still riding my sack. It still doesn't make you right.

Yes, you can ease of the clutch and start moving BUT with only a few exceptions you're going to ease of the clutch AND add throttle. If you're stuck in traffic on the interstate due to an accident, for example, you may find yourself inching forward a car length at a time and in that situation you MAY just ease of the clutch without adding throttle, but, other that situations like that you will pretty much always add throttle.

So, technically you can launch without adding gas but in practice that almost never happens because if you did the guy behind you would be ridding his horn!

Brian
IB4 Bimmer-bob smokes his clutch trying to figure out how to do this.

I would never actually do this unless you are in initial start up high idle or maybe in your traffic situation... but that's going to add a lot of really hard miles on that clutch.

It's not recommended to do but it will happen.
