Rear diffuser?

The original goal was better MPG's. I'm going to try and put some winglets on for looks. Maybe they will help with MPG too!

So I decided to post this here rather than create a thread about it. I was toying with the idea in my head and decided to sketch out a rear diffuser for kicks. The part would be replacing the already existing black plastic area of the bumper, probably made out of the same material or carbon fiber.

I doubt this will make it out of the paper but I wanted to share it with you guys to get some feedback.

Please excuse the lack of scale, and angle shot. this was a fairly quick sketch done freehand and I am miraculously out of range from a working scanner:


The X's are for exhaust points. Either single on driver, center or passenger side or double exhaust if you want that setup. I figure its good to make the design flexible on those accounts. As a bonus you dont have to cut into the bumper and it'll make the car a bit more drop-friendly(I've had nightmares of having the stealth exhaust installed under the bumper and having the car dropped 1.5" or more.)

Anyway, watcha think? If I had the funds and contacts to develop something like this I'd do it in a heartbeat.

(Sorry if this seems like a thread-jacking, it made more sense to me to post here than make another diffuser thread.)

This is more in line with what I was looking for. Replacing the entire black piece. It's painfully boring compared to the front end. I actually really like the look of the Gen. 1 MS3.

Thats what i had in mind. If someone prototyped that it would be amazing. It would remove a lot of the air caught in the bumper and look pretty sweet. Saying that im sure it would cost quite a bit to make.

That would be awesome. But alot of us dont have the tools or the skills to mold plastic. i have my car dropped over 1.5" and the rear diffuser I made covers the exhaust. You want you exhaust covered for the airflow. If you are looking at something like this 3D Carbon has theirs out!

The 3D Carbon one looks a little too plain to me. And I'd rather keep it all black rather than just the diffuser part of it black.

My sketch is doing something similar to what the diffuser on this wrx is doing
I'll sketch in more detail in the next few days to get something more solid.



EDIT: If I have a chance to talk to a few friends that do have experience in working with plastics I'll see if I can get something made but this may be way down the road.

fiberglass or carbon fiber would be much easier than plastic, still 2012-focus's aluminum is the easiest thing to work with.

I am trying to learn how to do carbon fiber, but i am probably a year or more away from being able to do something that complicated at a level that would be safe to sell it.

eah I've seen people work with carbon fiber when I was taking Industrial Design courses. Its a very long process.

I completely forgot about fiberglass, thats also an option.
