Idle issues need ideas

Hello focusFanatica , I am at a loss at the moment.

Here is my issue, My wife has a 02 focus se with the 2.0 SOHC spi. There is a intermittent problem with the drive ability of the car. Some times when you first start it it wants to idle incredibly rough unless you give it a good amount of gas. once you do that every thing clears out and seems to idle back to normal. You will at this time begin smelling a burnt carbon smell. Once you begin driving for the most part everything works fine. When you begin slowing down and come to a stop sometimes it will start idling really rough like it is choking then die. Again if you give it a decent amount of gas you can almost always get it to go away and begin idling fine. Some times it will die at idle with out warning. Dealer has been useless and the other garage just said since it is not constant they can not do anything. I have checked the compression 185 in all 4 cylinders The one consistant thing is when a cel does come on it is always cylinder 4 misfire and the plug get a lot of carbon build up when no other one does.

Here is what has been replaced:
MAF
PCV valve
Pcv valve hose
crank case vent hose
air filter
IAC
DPFE sensor
EGR valve
EGR valve tube rubber hoses to the DPFE sensor
#4 injector

New ford ignition coil
new Ford spark plug wires
new Auto lite iridium plugs

the fuel filter was changed about 13k ago

Any ideas what else to check. There does not appear to be any recalls on the fuel pump, i guess it could still be bad.

Thanks For any help you give
Jason

Well for anyone who searches this later and seems to not have found any solutions, Check your valves.

My problem ended up being a sticking exhaust valve on number 4 cylinder. With the valve cover off i pushed down on the rocker arm and watched the valve go down then start to come back up and stop then slowly continue to go back to normal. I did this a couple of times and compared it to the other cylinders and they worked fine.

So now we are on the process of un sticking the valve if we can not then time to replace the head.
