Loud Knocking Noise

I have a Y reg ford focus zetec, 1.6. Just recently, when starting the engine there is a loud knocking noise which appears to be coming from the front passenger side. The noise disappears once a gear is engaged or the clutch is pressed. The noise isnt there all the time, it happened a few weeks ago for a day or so then it has just happened again. Any ideas what this could be??

Could be the water pump. Mine was loose and would make a horrible rattling/knocking sound until i tightened it, problem solved, once again quiet :) But this awful sound was present until i put it in D.

If you have a broken motor mount, it can let the whole engine bounce around a bit more than it should.

If you can do some more detective work to find out more precisely where the noise is coming from, tough on intermittent issues.
