HOW TO: Wiring in Illuminated Door Sills
Here we go everyone, in response to VonKrause's How to wire in fog lights that I found very helpful, I wanted to help anyone considering installing illuminated door sill plates. First thing is first, go get yourself the Ford Sill kit..... I got mine from another member and it was $100. If you buy them from Ford they usually run you around $200 but you can usually find them on Ebay or check the marketplace.
this is what they will look like: ![]() Illuminated Sills by DarderSauce, on Flickr First thing you are going to want to do is remove the battery terminals (+ & -) Next you are going to want to remove the factory sill plates..... Just snaps right off. ![]() 3 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Then your passenger side kick panel ![]() 2 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 4 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Now remove your A pillar ![]() 6 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 5 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 8 by DarderSauce, on Flickr This is where you will be wiring in your Sill plates ![]() 7 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Unplug the connector and find the grey/violet wire ![]() 9 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Strip back some of the electrical tape so you can use a quick connector to splice in the wiring for the lights.... You will connect the red wire to the grey/violet wire (the black wire is the ground but we will get to that later) ![]() 13 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 12 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Now you are going to want to strip the black wire back so you can attach an end to it and ground it on a bolt under the kick panel (any bolt will do). But since I had only large ends I had to double the wire over so there was more metal connecting to the end I connected ![]() 14 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 16 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Now you have to feed the wire from the passenger side to the drivers side. I fed it as far back as I could so they would not be in the way. This is where a coat hanger/metal wire comes in. Feed the wire through from the drivers side and hook it to the wiring for the door sills so you can bring it back through. ![]() 18 by DarderSauce, on Flickr I ran the wire on top of this metal bracket ![]() 29 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Now you can remove your sill and kick panel on the drivers side door ![]() 19 by DarderSauce, on Flickr You can now drill the holes on the kick panels, make sure you do not drill into the clips that attach the sills to the body. The position you drill will depend on the side you are on. ![]() 21 by DarderSauce, on Flickr ![]() 20 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Next thing you are going to want to do is center the Illuminated Sills on the factory sills and tape off the end and the middle of where you want them. ![]() 22 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Next you want to clean the door sills with the alcohol pads (in kit) and apply the adhesive promoter (also in kit) and let the promoter sit for 5 min. ![]() 23 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Now you are ready to attach the plates!!! Remove the tape from the back of the plates and line them up with the lines you have taped off, this is also when you will feed the fiberoptic wire in the holes you drilled. After attaching the sills they will look like this ![]() 28 by DarderSauce, on Flickr Attach the battery terminals and make sure everything lights up and if it it does... re-assemble everything and you're done! Hope this helps and I will be happy to answer any questions you guys may have.
