so Tranmission specialist actually drove car yesterday [we are at 5500 miles in 11 months] and said this is not right ... and currently he is "researching" what to do. But is thinking that we probably are going to need a new clutch "at the minimum." I'm thinking that if that clutch change is like the new car ... I won't even have to think about the BS 1000 break in period again.

Maybe the BS 1000 mile break in period was just to see if the old clutch would make the grade ... sort of like a coin toss?

So OK ... today they ordered the clutch and "hopefully" I will get my car back early next week ...depending what they find when they pull the transmission.

But interestingly I ended up with a $25/day enterprise focus 2012 se sedan built 12.2.11. and the transmission with 4500 miles on it is perfectly fine. What upsets me most on the forum is owners who don't have a problem constantly hyping the 1000 mile break in fantasy that ford cooked up to spin fog on the early clutch and programming problems.

I have reset the mileage to see if this car gets the same mileage around town as the original ... I'm thinking that the bad clutch versions also suffered from mileage problems ... but we will see.

I had the upgrade done to my car yesterday while I took it in for an oil change. MAJOR improvement. I am happy.

I believe they gave out this 1000 mile break in period as a legitimate step. You really do have to wait for a short while to see if the parts smooth out, especially clutches. BUT, I dont think it mattered for the folks in your situation. Now, what has seemed to work for some is the "italian break in", wherein you flog the car from 0 to 80 at WOT, then stop aggresively. But that shouldnt be ncessary either. You are experiencing the the not so fun side of being the first to buy a new style car. Unlike a new iPhone, laptop, reader etc, a car is so complex and has so many interactions between the driver, the road, the environment, other parts on the car, that it seems the first model always has this kind of crap.

I feel for ya, I would be sooper upset if I had these issues.

Just to recap, I had the clutch replaced, steering gear replaced, and the update applied...... Wish me luck!

She drives WONDERFUL now. It's a night and day difference. No hesitation or shudder at all at take off.

I asked the service advisor why the clutch needed to be replaced... he called the tech over who performed all the work. The clutch assembly was LEAKING fluid. So they had to fix the leak and replace the clutch! He said that's why I had the shudder. I also confirmed that the transmission has the latest and greatest update.

They also fixed the steering wander issue... I LOVE MY CAR NOW. It drives amazing and it's not even past the 'learning' period.

I filled up at the gas station and got 46 MPG from the gas station to my house... all city driving. Amazing. I know that number will not stay but it shows that my gas mileage improved after the clutch replacement/DCT update.

I am so happy.

I thought that the clutch was supposed to be dry. How does it leak fluid?

Likely transmission fluid getting into the clutch assembly...

Glad to hear you are again loving your ride! I felt the same way after the TSB uodate on mine, and we dont even have the latest update. Gotta be a sweet feeling to get into your car and truly see how it was designed to drive.

I'm guessing Ford is all over the transmission supplier right about now. They jumped down my mother in law's throat (quality engineer at TRW)over a metal burr left on the side of the steering knuckle on the Mustang...
